Local SEO for Law Firms: How to Rank for the Cases You Actually Want
June 25, 2026
Most law firms show up in Google for something. The problem is that "something" is often the wrong thing. You might rank well for your firm name but barely appear when someone searches "DUI attorney near me" or "family law lawyer in [your city]." This guide explains how to fix that, without needing a technical background to do it.
Start With the Cases You Want, Not Just the Law You Practice
Before touching your website or Google Business Profile, get clear on which case types are most profitable and most enjoyable for your firm. Personal injury attorneys who want car accident cases should not be optimizing the same way as those chasing slip and fall or medical malpractice work. Each practice area needs its own focused effort. Trying to rank for everything at once usually means ranking well for nothing.
Your Google Business Profile Is Your Most Important Asset
When someone searches for a local attorney, Google often shows a map with three listings before any websites appear. Getting into that map pack is the fastest way to generate calls. Here is what actually moves the needle on your Google Business Profile:
- Choose the right primary category. "Personal Injury Attorney" and "Family Law Attorney" are different categories. Pick the one that matches your most wanted case type.
- Write a description that mentions your city and your specific services. Do not just list your firm name and phone number.
- Add photos regularly. Your office, your team, and even community involvement photos signal that your profile is active.
- Collect reviews that mention what you do. A review that says "great car accident lawyer in Columbus" is more useful than one that just says "highly recommend." You cannot write reviews for clients, but you can remind them to be specific when they leave one voluntarily.
Build a Separate Page for Each Practice Area
One page titled "Our Services" that lists everything your firm does will not rank for anything specific. Google needs to see a dedicated page for each area. A page for criminal defense, a separate page for DUI cases, another for estate planning, and so on.
Each page should do three things well:
- Use the specific phrase people actually search, such as "criminal defense attorney in [your city]" in the page title and first paragraph.
- Answer the real questions clients have before hiring a lawyer for that issue.
- Include your city or service area naturally throughout the page, not stuffed in awkwardly.
Citations and Consistency Still Matter
A citation is any online listing that shows your firm name, address, and phone number. Think Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Yelp, and your local bar association directory. If your address or phone number appears differently across these sites, Google gets confused about which information is correct. Audit your listings and make sure they all match exactly, including whether you spell out "Street" or abbreviate it as "St."
Links From Local and Legal Sources Build Trust
Google treats links from other websites as votes of confidence. For law firms, useful links come from local news sites covering a case you were involved in, bar association pages, local business directories, and community organizations you sponsor or support. You do not need hundreds of links. A smaller number of genuinely relevant ones carries more weight than a pile of low quality ones.
Track Where You Actually Rank, Not Just Citywide
Many attorneys check their Google ranking from their office and assume that is what everyone sees. In reality, your ranking changes depending on where the searcher is located. Someone searching from across town may see you much lower than someone a block from your office. This is why local SEO is about geography, not just keywords.
